I wonder if the reason that certain DS songs or older MK solo songs are left out is because the lyrics don't move Mark as much as it did at the time or
maybe he feels even though the music can be made to work without too much of a problem he may feel less of a connection with the song so he wouldn't feel
right playing it - it would explain a lot of the choices he makes. I think just as an example take a song like MFN was the reason it lasted as long as it did
live because it's a really great send up of the music business, but My Parties for example which is also a send up maybe in his view isn't as good a
joke for him as it was ..just an example I don't think that.

I think you could be right about that, strat! Both in general and when it comes to My Parties. I seem to remember (from a long time ago) that MK thought about
leaving My Parties out of the record because he didn't think the joke would even last 'till the release date. And he decided that he wouldn't sing
Private Dancer live because of the lyrics.

Mark Knopfler = Dire Straits
Mark Knopfler NOT playing any classic songs he has written before i.e. Sultans,R&J,Brothers in Arms etc etc is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS, FACT!!!!!!! Sorry but just have to air my own opinion Mark plays these songs because he wrote them, enjoys them and ulimately loves to please the fans. It's a bit like Eric Clapton NOT playing Layla!!!!! NOT GONNA HAPPEN! Ah that's better got that off my chest Before anyone slaughters me please remember it is just my opinion

I think this is a controversial topic because of the sheer number of fans that MK has, and all the differing opinions they have. It would be impossible for MK
to please everyone, of course. I, personally, don't think he will ever stop playing DS songs completely. There are so many good ones that fans would love
to hear played live, and it appears that Mark enjoys playing them. I think the present set list is a perfect mix of his music over the years.
When I think about the volume of MK's music, it must be difficult to chose which songs to play in a 2 hour concert. There are just so many great songs. He has never disappointed me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -Joan |

Don't get me wrong, I love DS songs, but he has written sooooooooo many songs since 1996, he could fill a rocking show without any DS classics. I've
plenty live recordings of DS songs so I'm really looking forward to "new live material".

Brothers In Arms is one of my absolute favourite songs written by Knopfler. And everytime I go attend a MK concert I hope he will play it and that I will
experience it even better then i have ever done. So you understand i wouldn't want to see that one removed from the setlist. Sultans of Swing and Telegraph
Road are classics too I rather not miss. Though with the lenght of Telegraph Road he could play like 3 other songs. I wouldn't mind to have The Man's
Too Strong, Iron Hand and Setting Me Up instead of TR.
Anyway, for this tour my wish came true. Hill Farmer Blues! I really hope it will be played on many tours to come. And that it will develop over time and gets even more lengthy with fancy licks and all. An other song i would like to see..eeuh hear.. appear on the setlist is Madame Geneva's. Such a wonderful song. Best regards, Michiel

For me, being a fan for 30 years, there is no difference between DS and MK Solo, just a seemless transition.
For me, the music is one and the same, the one constant being Mark's guitar and voice. It was this, all those years ago, that ripped into my soul, and has made me the person i am now, giving me the soundtrack to my life. The only difference being the amazing ,varied group of musicians he has bought along the way, from the early Straits days, to the current tour line up. I am lucky enough (thanks to varied forum members) to have a vast collection of bootlegs from early DS up until literally a few nights ago.! So i can choose to listen to any period in his history and enjoy. I can understand how people can pigeon hole DS and MK, but in my opinion all you have is one man who has just constantly managed to evolve, producing music and lyrics of an un-parralleled quality. Long may it continue. Cheers BBB. |

I fully agree with Terry about DS songs, I had a very strange feeling at the first show in Amsterdam because when you go to a concert without any knowledge of
the setlist, every song you hear is a little surprise. After 7 songs all the songs were MK solo stuff and some of them quite unexpected and I began to think,
excited by so many surprises, that finally MK took the decision of going on tour just with his solo stuff. When I heard the first notes of Romeo I thought
"Well, MK love this song so much, maybe this is the only one", but when I heard Sultans I remember I thought "Ok, so we are going to have the
same Dire Straits pack of songs as ever"
After that show, the second Amsterdam show, Madrid and Atarfe show my feelings were that many of that Straits songs really loosed part of his soul. I didn´t like any of the 4 versions I heard of Sultans nor the 4 versions of Telegraph, and I still wonder why So far away is still in the set. Don´t get me wrong, this songs are really good songs, but as Terry said, MK has a lot of solo stuff that can be substitute many of that Straits songs. |

Although I am not one of those people who want DS songs played at every concert, I really enjoyed the four-piece version of Sultans, especially on the second
night at Amsterdam and also Telegraph Road, but I won't be sorry when the time comes to have only solo material, because there is such an abundance of
brilliant songs yet to be heard live! We can always look at old DVDs after all!

Well, there is no official DVD with Sultans and Telegraph Road played live, only old VHS...

There are loads of bootlegs, but it would be nice to have an official DVD of this tour as it seems very special to me, particularly with the magnificent
lighting!

It's obvious Mark needs to play this songs. The first show of the tour wasn't sold out, if he would only play his solo work he wouldn't sell out
many venues. That's the way it is and that's fine by me.

I was devastated when i saw this years set lists - I couldn't believe that he is promoting KTGC with only 2 songs:-(
I could easily have listened to the whole album played live it is such a refreshing piece of work. And I was more upset seeing HFB in from TRD. There has to be DS songs in otherwise the peripheral fans won't come and see him. Personally - he has to play SOS and R&J and maybe Telegraph Road as has already been said they are milestones. But he coudl easily drop one or two and reintroduce TOL or Skateaway or Solid Rock even. I am glad I have seen the set list as if I hadn't I wouldn't have been to happy coming away after not having seen him for 3 years and only playing 2 songs from what has to be one heck of an album. |

Upset seeing HFB Robbie????
It's the masterpiece of the show! I couldn't have think of a better setlist than we hear now. I am so happy that I decided in september to do over 10 shows this tour. Normally it's just 4 or 5. I can't get enough of it. |

To get to the point, if DS songs were dropped, I simply would not go. And i'm sure there are many others like me...

Yes, I would like most dropped, with one or two exceptions!
I found the new material on this tour much more thrilling than the old stuff, but I would just like him to keep R&J, which is still one of my favourites and I really did love the version of Sultans I heard and as it was his first and most famous song, I would like to keep that one, but I now think the time has come to put TR aside. I agree with Ingrid, Hillfarmer's Blues was the masterpiece! I also loved Marbletown, True Love, The Fish and the Bird, Postcards, in fact all his later material ! I find it really sad and backward looking if some "fans" won't move forward with Mark in this great journey. I am going along with him!

Mk should play the songs he wants to play. Then it's up to us if we want to follow him or not. From his first to his last record, his music has kept
evolving. Many fans dropped out after Making Movies (the last real DS record, since that it's been Mk solo in different new direcions with different
musicians), but he gains new fans all the time. I think that the DS tag on MK is a limitation. I think when people in general hear about Knopfler, they think
"DS, yes, I know about that, but I'm not into DS music anymore. That was ages ago. Not interesting."). But if they heard his new music, they
would think: "Ah, nice music! This is something else.", and then buy a record and go to a show. And if more people knew about that MK's current
tour is not a reprize of or a parody on DS tours (or MK's 01 and 05 tours), I think more people would come to his shows. But of cource some would fall off.
Who cares?

For me.........
DS/MK........... Same thing.!!!!! 30 years ago, i fell in love with his guitar sound, his voice and his story telling. So for me nothing has changed.
I love everything he has ever done, and i know i will love everything he has yet to come
I will never be dissatisfied at one of his gigs. He can play anything from his entire back catalogue and i'd be happy. Sorry that i'm sitting on the fence with this one.
And i have to say as well, re. HFB. The 'BEST' song on the tour.!!!!! Played with masterfull passion.!!!!!!! The end solo, he closes his eyes and goes to another planet.
Cheers BBB
