Unless you've been living in a cave the last few years you've probably heard of the infamous Neil Young Archives, the first
installment of which has been rumored to be released for the past few years. I recently saw a news blurb saying part one would be released at the end of this
year as a set of 8 or 10 blu-ray dvd's in a pricey box. There are several other installments planned as well.
Wouldn't it be great to have a similar set of unreleased and rare MK material? Of course it would! OK, OK....I realize it will never happen, but we can still imagine what it might contain if such a set were to be compiled.
Possible entries:
Pre-DS recordings, home tapes, bar recordings, who knows what?
Orginal DS demos, including songs that don't circulate
Left over tracks from each of the DS albums/cds
Left over tracks from each of the MK solo releases
Left over tracks from the NHB release
Left over tracks from the MK soundtracks (especially Local Hero)
A sweet, complete, soundboard recording from each of the DS and MK tours (& NHB)
--including--at last--a soundboard from the '92 tour with 'Planet of New Orleans'
Bonus session work tracks from the many guest spots MK has appeared on over his career
Alternate and early versions of DS and MK songs, akin to 'The Beatles Anthology'
Cover versions recorded over the various sessions
A couple of live concert videos
Alternate music videos, home movies, etc.
The thing I find so fascinating about such a release is that it would no doubt be something I would play fairly often, unlike most of the box sets I have purchased. The majority of box sets seem to be compiled so as to be unsuitable for multiple listenings, with a few exceptions. I don't even buy box sets anymore since I typically enjoy the single cds much more.
Neil Young's Archives are rumored to be suitably pricey, and I suppose the blu-ray format is intended to discourage bootlegging. MK's archives could be pricey too--that would be all right with me (assuming that it was a quality compilation). Maybe it could be a limited numbered edition of 1000 or so, priced at $300-500 with the first 100 copies being autographed by MK and commanding a price around $1000. I know I would want a copy, and I bet most of you reading this would want one too.
Maybe we should start lobbying for this now, since Neil's archives have been in the works for so many years and yet still are not released. What other goodies would you like to see included in the MK Archives? What would you be willing to pay? How extensive should this set be? Details, details......
