I just found this petition via Poupystar website - what do you think about it?? I already signed it of course... www.petitiononline.com/KTGCMARK/petition-sign.html? I have to say, that for me (as for the most of other fans) is this tour REALLY THE BEST so far. And also - there is a new camera policy etc...and it would be really a pity if the DVD wouldn´t be recorded and released. We all know that this is very hot topic, many fans are asking Guy Fletcher on his website about DVD from this tour...from what he said, it seems that the DVD wouldn´t be very profitable. BUT - I think that it wouldn´t be so important for Mark if there wouldn´t be million sales!! I think that Mark could also do the best for his fans!! On the last solo tour, he tried to provide us the digital downloads on passalong, but it was only audio, it was loosy and all setlists were almost the same every time. Also many fans didn´t know about these downloads at all. Real Live Roadrunning was pretty good DVD, but...I think that it was mistake that there was almost NO promotion (in Czech Republic there was not promotion of this DVD at all and it could be found in a few shops only)...and in spite of the fact quality was good, the setlist was not very interesting for most fans (only a few hits from both artists) and atmosphere was completely missing. And...in my opinion Mark´s best guitar solos are missing there too. I was very sad when I read many opinions about this DVD like "MK forgot how to play his guitar" - and it is not truth AT ALL !! What a pity!! And...that was why it was not sold well. I really don´t know how the Night In London DVD was sucsessful but it is not real MK DVD for me. Yes, interesting "little" concert. But there was also problem with setlist - mainly GH songs. It would not be so bad, but why are not there SOS and MFN... The most well-known DS songs?? So, I think that it would be the first "real" MK solo DVD. Let´s imagine...Telegraph Road - first time on official DVD. The same for SOS...Why Aye Man...What It Is...and many these songs. What do you think about it?? Danny Jun

I want a DVD, but I won't be signing it. If MK wants to release a DVD, he'll do it. A petition isn't going to change his mind I'm afraid.

Yes, I also think petitions cannot completely change MK´s opinion about this DVD thing, but it could minimally change his opinion a bit (if he would see hundreds of wishes on that page). Let´s say that this is one of a few ways (together with mailing these requests to poor Guy Fletcher who cannot do a lot with this problem - he said, that it is not his decision) how to list our wishes on net. regards Danny

I read GF's forum EVERY DAY and in some answers our great Doc said that: "...one of the problems with a DVD is that the record company don't see it as a viable commercial project as the market for such thinks for MK is believe it or not, very small. But we are discussing the 'options that we have." If you use the search option in Guy's forum, put there the letters "DVD" and you'll find everything about it. GF insinuated that the DVD realize is more record company thing than MK's lack of desire... SO!!! If the petition has its meaning it is NOT to hassling MK & Band in ANY WAY!! It is about the record company - we must convince them that they are wrong about 'MK's DVD market is very small'. But I'm worring it is a bit late to do that. Not because they would feel hassled but because releasing a decent live project (be it a DVD, VHS, audio recording, whatever) has always been a problem. It's absolutely fair and normal for fans to request a live DVD, especially now that they don't allow any other option. If I understand everything, the band would be OK to release a DVD but not the record company. But the band also introduced the new recording policy which means they don't really want a DVD. So who's playing games ? Give a dog an ill name and hang him.

What do we know about what Mark want's? I don't know if Mark want's a DVD or not, and I understand that it might not only be his decision. I think we need to convince the record company. So in my opinion the petition is a good idea. Hope all fans who want's a DVD from the tour will sign. And Dusty: What do you mean that things are tough enough for MK and the band right now? Have I missed something? I don't see how requests from fans for a DVD is hasseling. It shows you that people love you're music and the work you're doing. I would be worse if no one wanted a DVD... It's just a request anyway. The decision is 100% up to Mark and the record company. But the more people who want's a DVD, the more sense it would make to release one. Jarle

About 22 thousand on the markknopfler.com interactive forum. I'm not sure what sort of projected sales figures would push the record company's buttons, but I don't think a global petition of even a couple of hundred thousand signatures would do it. Regards

They have had the IEM controversy and people filming every night. They must be really bored with DVD requests by now.

Posts: 1201 (16/06/08 02:22:45) Registered User Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	The way i see it guys, is if there isn't some kind of "Crowfly" recording/DVD, which a few artists have used succesfully, then I just can't see there being a live release. We have to remember the simple economics, and a live album would be bought by between 250,00- 500,000 hard core fans (in my estimate). Whilst that might seem like plenty, it would be difficult to commercially justify such a release, which I reckon would lose money (from what I understand of the music business). Mark does enjoy playing for us, but he isn't going to enter into a venture that loses cash, it just wouldn't make any sense. Obviously MK will donate to charities, as he has done in the past from shows, but this kind of production would leak cash to other commercial operators (printers/distributors/record stores etc). Even 10,000 of us signing a petition won't make a difference, in my opinion.

And when I read Guy's diary it seems that audio-recording will be forbidden as well! My little question: Filming is not allowed because it's disturbing other fans and the band. Ok, in a way I understand it because not everyone who is filming is doing it in a way not disturbing others (remember the tripod in Amsterdam). But how in the world can audio-recording disturb others? Microphones are on clothes as far as I noticed during all the gigs (sometimes in the hands), the equipment is in a pocket, a bag or lies on the knees. What's next? No still cameras as well? Bodysearching, looking for hidden equipment (if it's hidden it can't disturb others!), no telephones allowed because the camera's on the telephones are improving every day (most MK-fans are between 30 and 50 I think, so a lot of them have little children, when going to a concert they want to be available in case of emergency, so these people can't go anymore!). In my opinion everything is going a little extreme nowadays! I will sign this petition, it doesn't cost much time, so why not! If it doesn't help ok, but it doesn't hurt either! I agree that signing the petition only takes a few moments, and I don't want to discourage anyone from doing that. All I'm saying is don't get your hopes up. The only way that I think there will be a release is if Mark wants to put one out. They normally come out every 5/6 years, and the one with Emmy-Lou was only a couple of years ago.

And the reason THEY gave not filming was disturbing the band and the audience, no copyright issues were mentioned at any moment.

Myself not so optimistic about this format because of cost involved to produce and distribute. If they really wanted to cash in with a live DVD, from a pure commercial point of view, more easy would be to use some of the many unreleased live Dire Straits footage. But this of course is an option that Mark is not interested in. But the shows are audio recorded and releasing live audio show cost a lot less, current technology allow this . One good example : see http://www.muletracks.com/ YES THIS CAN BE DONE!!! No DRM, cheap and lossless.

I signed it because I'd hate to think that it "got out" that there was a petition for this great man to release a live DVD, and only 200-300 people world wide signed it..

As Guy replied to a recent question on his forum on the subject of offering recordings of live shows online for download. "We know that it's perfectly possible. Mark doesn't want to do that". Regards

Generally we can gather from his past actions and answers to questions (his words) that all his decisions are music driven not fan driven ..that's all, he has said in the past that if 10,000 people go one way then he goes the other. Also Guy has made it pretty clear what Marks attitude is generally to these things. If there is a DVD it won't be because of a petition. Go ahead if you think it will work I don't .
