But if there was to be a reunion then the original four piece would be the real deal, but then again they could only play songs from the first two albums :D If such a thing would happen, I would definately do all I could to get tickets for that gig! Then again as Mossguitar said the most likely DS lineup would be quite a bit different and I think that it could only be called DS if it had MK, JI, AC, GF, CW (the sax player, not the drummer :) and then DC on drums. The rhythm guitarist isn't so important on this "modern" DS line-up. Me thinks :)

Bass has to be John Illsley, with Clarky and Fletch on keyboards (but should we have keyboards, cos they weren't there in 1978???). For Rhythm Guitar, you have to go back to Mandela, and have Eric. Highly unlikely in practice, but there is nobody better. Chris White on Sax, because he made the sound his own. On drums I would go for Jeff Pocaro, but given that he is dead then it would be Terry Wiliams. If Mark was to choose though, then i reckon it would be Danny, who has been around the set up for the last 17 years. Let's all dream that it might happen!!!!

I also beleive (but stand corrected) that for the last tour, Ed Bicknell was a member!!! ******************** I have now been corrected, it is now MK & JI only!!! It's the middle-aged Dire Straits supergroup! This seems about as likely as any other DS reunion, so why not?

I wasn't there, so it is hard to choose who need to be part of the band but I choose: Mark, Guy Fletcher, John Illsley, Chris White, and Danny Cummings. And if we can dream then the concert will take a few hours and as guest stars I would like to have of course Richard Bennett, Glen Worff, John McCusker, Matt Rollings, Emmylou Harris, Steve Phillips, Brendan Crocker, Sonny Landreth, Paul Franklin, Jim (piano) and not to forget Eric Clapton!!! What a day and evening that would be! Information Wikipedia about being group members from start to end: As well as playing bass on all the Dire Straits recordings, Illsley also contributed vocals to their Communiqué, Making Movies and Brothers in Arms albums. Illsley was the only group member (other than Mark Knopfler) who remained in the line-up of Dire Straits right through until the group's dissolution in 1995. At the time when the band split ut. And if i don't remember wrong, the On Every Street album says: "DS is MK, JI, AC and GF". Now it's 2008, so the legal situation could be different.

When Cream came out (and what a show that was) there was just the 3 of them. Equally Police came out as a 3 piece and were brilliant, yet their last World Tour involved backing singers and extra musicians. In your dreams (because i don't think it will ever happen) Would you want to see a show with DS as a 4 piece, as they started, or as a 9 piece (or more) as they finished???

I´m sure that Guy Fletcher and Chris White will be part of the team, on drums I guess Danny Cummings has his advantage as he is playing drums with Mark since 2005 and he played before like a percussionist. ¿Guitar and second keyboards? I would like to see Alan Clark back, and the guitar, I´ll bid for Phil Palmer or Robbie McIntosh, but Richard Bennett and Matt Rollings would be a logical choice as both are very talented and proffesional musicians. So, I guess my line-up would be Mark, John, Guy, Chris, Danny, Matt and Richard

I'd envision a three day DS festival with all the musos from beginning to end, a sort of progressive musical journey revisited in chronological order. Perhaps with variations of benchmark songs along the way as some have been performed so differently over the course of time. I'd want it to proceed into MK's solo work as well but if we were to hear every recording of the DS era I believe we'd need more than 3 days. And of course Paul Franklin would be a must. There's just no replacement for the sounds he produced on that pedal steel. I cannot possibly choose between the raw and polished, they are equally important and breathtaking in their own rite. While it would possibly be one of the highest drawing events in musical history and could fuel resources for many charities as well as revitalize CD sales and introduce great musicians to a new era of listeners, perhaps inspire and change the direction of new artists coming out of the chute and send the millions of fans into a feeding frenzy worldwide to ultimately beat out any record tour take at the gate, from what we know about MK's position on the big events this would be his personal nightmare, a logistical clusterfunk and impossible from any perspective other than the fertile imagination of the longing fans who cannot let the glory days go. Some friends of mine had the luck to met Ed Bicknell one day walking by a well known Chelsea´s street and they talked about that, and Ed was very clear about it, Dire Straits were 4 people in the beguining, MK, David, John and Pick, when David left, they were three, and Alan and Hal were hired musicians for the band, when Pick left, DS were just MK and John, Alan, Hal and Terry were hired musicians as Tommy Mandel and Mel Collins... The difference with those it was that Alan, Hal and Terry were hired to be Dire Straits members, as happened later with Guy, Jack and Chris. Regarding that note in the OES record Ed told something very specific that I won´t tell here (a very specific word ) but the message was something like there were some "legal issues" related to that note, although DS were just MK and John. Don´t remember that much but I guess it was something related about royalties of the records, concerts etc I also remember Terry Williams told to a friend of mine that all of them had their own managers except MK and John that already had Ed Bicknell to represent them.
