Is there a special story behind it?
Because why he plays the bass on that track and not John Illsley?

I remember an interview where it was said that Illsley broke a finger during the recording sessions so Tony Levin was more a "jump-in" for him.

I asked also on Guy's forum and this is his answer :
Its correct , no special story behind it, just a style thing. Maybe he doesn't remember the broken finger anymore? I don't know , Henk |

I don't think JI would've had a broken finger. It's just as GF says, style. I don't think JI is really capable of playing that slap style, at
least not as well as Levin.

Yeah but he played it live on the tour (illsley)....... Did he not play it slap style I cant remember?

No he didn't, the tune was quite completely rearranged. IMO One World is the worst tune in DS/MK history.
Here's a live version from the BIA tour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTJFhzjVTTY

This is taken from MUSICIAN Sept. 1985. It is written by Bill Flanagan.
The next day, Illsley, in an attempt to keep himself healthy, goes jogging in Central Park, slips and sprains his wrist: The impending tour and unfinished album are getting to be a real concern. Illsley and Knopfler decide to bring in hotshot bassist Tony Levin to cut "One World," a tune which becomes more upbeat in the transition. Illsley, his forearm in a cast, sits drinking coffee while Knopfler adds guitar to the song. |

Do (did) they have a "Central Park" on the Island of Montserrat where, it is well documented, BIA was recorded???

It was recorded in Montserrat , New York Power Station (which has a nice big park nearby) and air studios London.. apparently.

I would say, with all my regrets, that during the years some accident events enforced some unfair underestimations about John Illsley's guitar playing skills. And it is nothing to do with MK's opinion, but with incorrect interpreting of some facts by the fans. It's a pity....I saw John from very different point of view in Bush Hall and was very impressed ( I stayed 2 meters far from him). I like Toni Levin too - saw him with Peter Gabriel some years ago. But the article by Strat, mentioned above seems correct to me. |

Henk, sorry I don't have a scan but it was taken from "MUSICIAN Sept. 1985. It is written by Bill Flanagan." which used to be on Tomas Molin's www.knopfler.net site which seems to no longer be there. ygm.
One thing I'll say about John is he's also a great electric 6 string guitar player , I listened to him sound checking in Ireland and he's a lyrical player. Also he plays bass with a great touch and feeling - just listen. On musical theory/handling any style side of things he doesn't do that it's just not him and he's said that himself. Same as Mark doesn't do some styles as it's just not what he's about. |

Dermot , many thanks for sending me the interview by pm and digging this out.
I must have it somewhere but I still can't find it , will look again this evening. And off course there are no doubts about JI talents as bass player and as 6 string electric player . I wish I could see a gig from him this year ! I'm still a big fan remember , his signed print of his blue strat is still in my living room .
Many greetings , Henk |

strat61, I've got saved on my PC an interview by Bill Flanagan, called "Written In My Soul"...Is this the same?

I had a little chat with Jonh today and asked him , and this is his answer :
I fell down in central park and actually had a small fracture there was no way I could play on the track , and every player would give a different feel to a track so there you have it,Guys memory must be fading !! So the interview was right, my mystery is solved , .

Well, it was interesting to know that. Thank you Henk for sharing this info and to strat that mentioned the interview.

Thanks for the info! Now if JI would've played on the album version, would it have been more like the live version? And could it be that One World was the
last track recorded for BiA?

I don't know if Illslely played the track on the album ,it would be different , probably , the interview says also this :
Illsley and Knopfler decide to bring in hotshot bassist Tony Levin to cut "One World," a tune which becomes more upbeat in the transition. And I suppose (but I don't know for sure) that One World was the latest track recorded for the BIA album. |
