I think Van Halen's 'Jump' has got to be a contender... all the wrong notes, in all the wrong places... flashy and pointless... all the things MK disapproves of!
Wat does everyone else think?

If Private Dancer is the second worst guitar solo of all time... |

|
...then what gets first place? Does anyone know if MK had a winner in mind?

Its not quite the worst guitar solo of all time and i dont THINK this falls into this category but a solo i do like is the middle section of 'I'm Mandy
fly me' by 10cc - a groovy collection of accoustic guitars leading into an electric crescendo! Quality!

Its got to be one of Jimmy Pages - he has played some diabolical tuneless stuff in his time. And still does! Beating a guitar with a violin bow (and the fans
cheering it) takes the biscuit though!:-)

I have to nominate any part of "Free Bird", by Lynard Skynard. It's the most atrocious, overblown, boring,
overrated piece of "music" ever recorded. YUCK!

Afraid I have to disagree gayle - I love Free Bird. True, it's nothing like Mark Knopfler, but it's nevertheless a brilliant piece of searing guitar.
Frankly, it's in the same kind of mode as Telegraph Road - although a very differently themed song!
For really atrocious guitar solos, I nominate Bill Haley. Any Bill Haley solo. Take the most obvious one, Rock around the Clock. Why is that song so popular? Why? Why? WHY? Incidentally, for tongue-in-cheek dreadfulness, have a listen to Canyons of Your Mind by the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band - that is brilliantly awful! |

Andrew, I respect your opinion! Can I interest you in some *mind-altering drugs? OOPS! I think those may have already been in *place!
*Disclaimer: Nobody is being accused of using mind-altering drugs, nor are they endorsed by this forum. All use of mind-altering drugs is discouraged, unless one has a cyber-prescription from TommyJ88 or gbobmi..........

Interesting how people have different opinions. I would say Rock Around the Clock is a good solo, pretty impressive playing for 1954 or whenever it was.
I would agree with Jump. Technically, it's impressive guitar playing. But it just does not fit the song at all. It's a catchy. synth-driven pop song, last thing it needs is a widdly solo. My worst solo would be What's the Frequency Kenneth? by REM. It's one of those "backwards" solos, ie they have played the song backwards in the studio then recorded a guitar solo over it, so that when it is played back normally the guitar solo sounds like it is backwards. The Beatles and many others did this in the 60s with great results, but the REM attempt just sounds crap. |

Hi,
Free Bird is quite good I think! It very much sounds to me like Sultans (just a short one after the lyrics, before the quiet part), he playes there very similar tones, so it can't be that bad, right? But I don't like the
way the singer sings.
You're right Dusty about Jump, the solo is no so bad, but doesn't fit the song very much. On the other hand it's better when this kind of song has some guitar solo...(unlike Walk of Life for example) The worst has got to be Jimmy Page, it's terrible with that fiddlestick (or whatever you call it).

Ha, well when I saw Jimmy Page in London last month I thought his solos were pretty awesome, violin bow included! Nigel Tufnel took it one step further and used the whole violin!

The@%%@! didn't work for me, so I watched some videos on youtube. Oh man, Terrible!!!! imho. I mean I don't like when guitarists do all kinds of crazy
stuff with this ecstatic look their faces (in my language we have this very good expression that 'they can't stay within their skin'). Tufnel kinda
reminds me of Ritchie Blackmore, who used to play with his shoulder, behind his head, with his foot (and destroy his guitar and throw it to the audience, I
still can't comprehend how can a human being do this to a guitar). Tufnel took it one step further, and made it even worse imho. It sounds too psychedelic
for me, but otherwise I like Jimmy Page.

Ohhhh! Dusty! Nigel Tufnel from Spinal Tap. One of my fave, all-time bands! Those guys know how to take it to an 11-bar none!

Um, yeah, Bobo Tufnel is actually a "joke" guitarist, he's from Spinal Tap which is a spoof band. So really he's having a joke at the likes
of Page and other "pretentious" guitar players.
MK is a big fan of Spinal Tap! |

Maybe MK will give us a version of "Rock 'n' Roll Creation" or "Stonehenge" (complete with props) on the tour
and Glenn Worf can have another go at trashing his bass. YEAH ROCK 'N' ROLL!!! Regards |

has been doing so since about 1975. It must be drink, drugs or something but fame didn't do him (or us) any favours - He was an amazing guitarist in his
early days but sadly in my opinion went downhill too soon. If ever there was an example of a guitarist 'unimproving' with age its JP - sadly :-(

OOOHHH, bobo, you must find a copy of Spinal Tap! A hilarious satire on the rock n' roll band of the 80's (any rock n' roll band!). A classic film.

Gayle, hopefully you agree with me that Kill to Get Crimson would have sounded better if it had been mixed in Dobly?
