What a show!
The band were relaxed, the atmosphere was great and - with the exception of Mark's vocals which were muddy and buried in the mix - the sound was fantastic.
One of the best gigs I've seen at the City Hall.

It really was a fantastic show.
w4teroftyne, do you live in Newcastle? If so, any chance you could tape the ITV local news today? Dan, aka forum member Waterline Man won Guy Fletcher's caption competition and was kind enough to take myself and Colin aka forum member ubhal with him to the Meet and Greet. Nigel aka forum member Best Brown Baggies came second and was also there, with his father. We were led into a very, very small room at the back of Newcastle City Hall. As well as the competition winners there was a very, very brave young man called Bradley who had suffered some terrible medical problems but had never complained about all the painful treatment he was receiving. As a result of his bravery he was at the Meet & Greet with his parents. The ITV local news had a camera there and filmed MK presenting Bradley with an award from the charity Bravehearts of the North East, which MK is patron of. It really was a very nice gesture by MK and I should also point out that the rest of the band went to great lengths to shake hands and chat with Bradley and his parents as well, it really was a great effort all round. MK then took the time to say hello and shake hands with all of us who were there and we then had some tunes from the band. As I say, the room was SERIOUSLY small. I was crammed in right against Matt's keyboard and amp and MK was sat in front of me playing the guitar, literally inches away from me. I got a great view of the back of his head! The tunes were great, lots of joking about by MK and the band. Afterwards they all signed autographs for us, a fantastic experience all round. The show itself was great, same set as Edinburgh, ie 18 song, no DGTK but SW instead. I'm fairly certain that MK's solo on SoS was a good bit longer than in Edinburgh on Sunday. Being Newcastle, Local Hero got an amazing response. Guy was beaming from the stage, as was I in the audience. It was amazing to be experience that, I can honestly say it brought a tear to my eye. Steve Phillips and Brendan Croker (and TK!) were all in the audience, I had a brief chat with Steve outside while waiting to go into the M&G. Overall my two gigs (Edinburgh and Newcastle) have been fantastic. Two personal dreams have come true. Firstly, I was able to see the show from the front row in Edinburgh. Huge thank yous to Jordan aka forum member thesilb for giving me a spare front row ticket. Secondly to be at the M&G, truly a once in a lifetime experience. Big thanks to Waterline Man for taking me, and of course to Guy for arranging and MK & the rest of the band for playing and meeting us. But if anyone could record the news it would be great to see the section with MK. :) |

Oh, one funny little story I forgot to mention.
When I found out that I would be going to the M&G, I bought this cool poster of ebay to ask MK and the band to sign.

Can somebody tell me if my follow up post about my poster was deleted for some reason or if it just didn't post properly?

I have just returned from my two last concerts, Edinburgh and Newcastle and it would be hard to say which was the best because they were both fantastic, but
probably Newcastle wins by a cat's whisker.
One of my neighbours and her daughter came to the Edinburgh concert (it was my neighbour's very first concert) and she was ecstatic to say the least and I think she is now on the road to being a real MK fan! I have been doing a lot of nurturing along the way! The only thing I would say about Edinburgh is that I thought MK looked very tired and I was worried about how he would be when I next saw him at Newcastle. I needn't have worried at all, because at Newcastle he was full of life, played magnificently, smiled and joked and altogether seemed to be really enjoying himself, as did the rest of the band. The set list was the same as Edinburgh and one of my favourites was "Marbletown" which just seems to get better and better and the ending even longer and more beautiful every time. It has changed a fair bit since I saw it first in Amsterdam. Speedway and Telegraph Road have become much more powerful now, to my ears, since the start of the tour and are also on my list of favourites, but it is so difficult to have favourites when everything is so good! Another thing that happened to me in Newcastle is also a minor (to me major) miracle! Me and my husband were walking down a street in Newcastle city centre, mid-afternoon and as we passed a hotel we saw MK and some of the band (Richard and Danny) sitting in the window! We were really taken by surprise and I waved to them through the window and they waved back. We then walked on around the corner and a minute or so later we heard someone shouting to us. We turned around and it was MK in his big black car beckoning us over to talk to him, Danny was sitting next to him. What followed seemed quite surreal and off-the-wall and I think I will never forget it. What I remember though is how lovely MK was - friendly, relaxed and he gave me one of those huge smiles. He asked me how I was and I said I was fine and enjoying the shows and thanked him. I can't remember much else, except my husband asked if he was in good form and he said "Very good form, thank you". I knew my day would come sometime, but I never thought it would be in a situation like that! I am up in the clouds and probably will be for a very long time. It's a good thing I have a very understanding husband! It was great also to meet all the members of the forum, some who I have met before and some I haven't, somehow it feels like a sort of extended family. My concerts are all over now, but I hope those of you whose turn hasn't come yet will have as terrific a time as I have had. |

Blimey. You don't get many artists actually beckoning fans over to them in their big black cars! It shows that MK will give his time over to people if he
has some to spare. What a great bloke.

How wonderful that you were all able to meet MK & band - whether at the meet & greet or on the street! And to have MK come looking for you is amazing! I am so happy for all of you and that you shared your experiences. Thank you! Emily from Boston |

It was simply the best ever gig I have seen at the City Hall. Apart from the first 2 songs where the mix was awful - couldn't hardly hear the vocals the
gig got better and better as it went on. The sound was absolutely superb after that and the guys are surely the best in the world at what they do. True
professional musicians. MK was on form - vocals very good and clear (not much mumbling although he did miss a few intros to some verses!). His guitars sounded
superb as did his playing.
Going Home was the highlight I think - it was lovely to see it played that way for a change and it was so powerful - i don't think the band wanted to stop playing. Danny played out of his skin literally - the most complete/perfect drummer I have come across and the welcome addition of McClusker on Violin etc. was the icing on the cake. Aside from this there has been much debate about what MK plays at his gigs re DS songs. Well I can only say what i see and i see lots of people turning up to see MK who do it becasue of DS - not who he is now. Yes there are the die hard fans but most people are there to see the 'voice and guitar of Dire Straits'. We were told at the beginning of the show that no cameras were allowed and that anyone using them (and mobile phones) would be ejected! Hope there are some good audio recordings though:-) |

You can watch a clip from the presentation at the Meet and Greet online:
http://www.itvlocal.com/tynetees/ Watch the news bulletin, it's right at the end, about 5mins in. I'm trying to work out a way to download it as I guess it will be replaced with another news bulletin soon. If anyone else has the technical know how please download it. You can get a brief glimpse of me, BBB, Waterline Man etc! |

THANK YOU ALL for your review, I loved to read it!
Dusty what a lucky guy you were to be asked by Waterline Man for the M&G!! It is also great to hear that you met Nigel, his father and Ubhal. I hope to have that possibility for a M&G also in future. It must be a wonderful experience and something you never will forget. Btw I can't watch the picture, is it gone or is it my computer? Dear Val, I am also glad to hear that you were able to talk with Mark. Whaauww!!! In normal conditions
when a man shouts at ladies like us, we perhaps look, but sure don't pay further attention to him and think he is crazy, ...............but in this
case!!!! I think I would stumble, laugh, act like a fool, but I am sure Mark wouldn't mind! I am sure Colin had to laugh about you and yeahhh he is a very
understanding and nice husband, just like you are a sweet lady! Of course I envy you all who have been at a meet and greet or had the possibility to talk or shake hands
with Mark at the street, but you all deserve it, being fans for such a long time! Fieneke

Panic over! Using some technical jiggery pokery I was able to pick up the Newcastle local news on my satellite dish. Luckily they repeated the whole segment on
the late news, so I recorded it in DVD quality.
A nice bonus for a future DVD! |

Fieneke - Thank you for your kind words and I hope I didn't disgrace myself too much! LOL
Slavi - I hope when the show comes to Sofia that you will have as wonderful a time as I have had and that you too will meet MK and the band! |

I saw a nice big mic resting on the middle of the front row of the balcony - very good spot for recording and well away from too much audience interference.
Here's hoping;-)

I finally got my arse in gear and uploaded the news report featuring MK and brave young Bradley Downes at the Meet and Greet in Newcastle to youtube.
You can view it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ow5IF1ox0ac If you are very eagle eyed you may be able to spot Waterline Man, ubhal, BBB and myself in the background as MK presents the award. I have been in touch with Poupy and I will be getting the original footage to him for inclusion as a bonus feature on one of the multicam DVDs that he is working on. |
