Who would the personnel be ? |
Lead | |
|
I am often asked if MK will reform DS. Just suppose that MK decided to do a DS tour - unlikely I know - but, given that there were various incarnations of DS,
who would be in the band ? For example, on drums would it be Pick Withers, Terry Williams or Danny Cummings ? Same on guitar, would it be David, Hal, Jack or
Phil ?

The question is: Mel Collins or Chris White?
How come you're asking, Terry? Have you had a nice dream? ![]()

I'd say, the original 4 would make most sense!
on the other hand, DS without Guy wouldn't make much sense! So MK, DK, JI, PW and GF! |

Is Danny qualified?
I mean he didn't actually play drums with the Straits did he? On the '92 tour Chris Whitten was the drummer and Danny played percussion. On the assumption that a reunion would involve playing stadiums rather than the "smaller" venues Mark seems to prefer nowadays, my ideal line up would be: Mark (obviously) Alan Clark & Guy Fletcher - keyboards. John Illsley - bass Hal Lindes - guitar Chris White - saxophone & flute Terry Williams - drums Danny cummings - percussion But if it was a low key (Notting Hillbillies style) tour, then I would like to see the original band plus Guy and Chris White. Regards

For the bass its easy , there was only one bass player with DS : John Illsley.
But lets face it : he's a great bass player .

All i can say is that I really tried to imagine who of the Straits folks I would like to see again, and all I can say is:
I really hope Marks never decides to do that step! It is all history! The only person I really miss musical wise is Jim Cox because he really gave something special to MKs music. John McCusker is a far better musician and could never be replaced by one of those guys, nevertheless I liked them all very much. So my dream band is the latest one. Sorry if this sound harsh, but it is my opinion! Love Expresso |

For me there is only one way a ds reunion could work. Mark would be permanently on stage and the musicians that have supported him over the years come on when
needed to do particular songs. So everyone that has ever been involved in a ds line up would be backstage and play a part. So for Waterline it would the be the
original lineup but for golden heart it would be the 96ers. For cases like romeo and juliet, it would be up to mark who to pick as most lineups have played it!
It would be a Mark knopfler and friends style event! BTW, i reckon that there is going to be a ds gig in the near future and that is the news that guy will "spill" soon! However I also thought that waterline would start the KTGC concerts so am probably totally wrong as usual! MB x |

That would be great MB! A great gig indeed! I can't see it happen thought I don't think this is the news Guy is going to spill (imminently,
aaaargggghhh!!). A new studio record in the pipeline or a release from the KTGC tour is more likely!

If there ever WOULD be a DS reunion the personnel is:
MK John Illsley of course Alan Clark & Dr. Fletch Danny Cummings Eric Clapton or Richard on guitar Chris White Plus John McCusker or Paul Franklin, depends on the song selection that Mark chooses. But the best ever MK bands are the current one or the Original 96ers. With Chad on drums and Jim Cox on Piano. I do not miss DS. We have MK and that's the best thing. When they
decide to play some big charity gigs it would be cool. But no more...

I love MK as he is, but love DS also. For me, it's an easy question, except for rhythm guitar. Illsley is there, of course. Danny Cummings deserves the
drummer gig. Cannot do without Guy Fletcher. If there must be a sax, it would be Chris White. A big "no" to DK, unless he's more comfortable with
who he is now, and a total no to Lindes. I liked Sonni pretty well. I think he's now relaxing in Mexico somewhere . In my book, McCusker would be
fantastic, if the new songs fit him. Who have I left out?

Hey don't forget Clapton for rhythm guitar wasn't he a member albeit briefly? I think personnel is less important than the songs played and approach
taken.
Who officially (legally) is Dire Straits now just Mark and John? |

I am agree with Marie...Mark, John Illsley, Danny Cummings on the drums for sure, Guy Fletcher, Chris White ( for sure too!!!
). These people were around Mark in some way all over the years. Don't know
who would be the second guitarist ( why not Clapton indeed??)

I think a likely DS reunion lineup could be:
MK - guitars JI - bass AC - keys GF - keys, guitars Danny C - drums Chris W - sax Robbie Macintosh - guitar (I don't think it's likely that Hal, Jack, EC, DK or Phil P would be invited. Robbie M ducked up last time DS was "reunited", didn't he? Or maybe the other guy, the one with the glasses who played the promo gigs.). Morten |

It should be:
MK JI GF & AC Jack Sonni Chris White Chris Witten Danny Cummings |

Not thinkable to me not to have Danny in the mix. He brings vibrancy and joy to his playing. I love watching him when he's playing. Really,
anytime...he's eminently watchable. (And plays pretty good too!)

Funny topic.. :)
I think the line up should be: Mark, John Illsley, Danny Cummings, Guy Fletcher, and I think that since DS has almost had a new second guitarist for eatch tour I think Richard Bennett should be the new second guitar player in the band...! He realy is a good guitarplayer.. On the other hand it would have been nice to se Hal Lindes back on guitar too... ;) And of course Chris White and Alan Clark...! I realy like Best brown baggies comment about haveing David Gilmour as a support act!

Moss, the guy with the glasses playing guitar during the promo gigs is Luke Brighty ;-) Robbie McIntosh was cool too on guitar during the 2002 gigs.
I couldn't think of a DS reunion (and even a MK record and tour) without Danny C. The best I've ever heard on drums. Let's say, Danny C, Mark, Jack Sonni or Robbie McIntosh, John Illsley, Alan C and our GF of course ;-) And if there was to be a sax, who else but Chris White? That said, I don't miss the Straits, as long as Mark and his fabulous guys still compose and tour... Cheers all. |

Hi,
Am I the only one here wouldn't like Danny C there?? I mean, when I hear hte words "DS", I imagine Pick or Terry, they stayed with the group for the longest period (just DS). If it was DS tour again, then definately not Danny C. on drums for me, either Pick or Terry. From the guitarists, probably Hal. |

Hang on, there! It's a huge difference between the most likely DS lineup and the most wanted DS lineup.
I don't think it's likely to see Terry or Pick in a DS lineup, but it's likely that we have the (almost) DS member Danny C there. If it was my choice, it would be Pick. He IS the DS sound to me. Terry was fun, but not DS. And I don't think it's likely to have Richard in the band. He is great, but i don't think MK would make him fly in for a DS reunion. Unless if it was for a new world tour. My choice: Hal, but that will never happen. Luke Brightly or Robbie MacIntosh is my bet. |

Yeah, but the whole "DS reunion tour" thing sounds to me very unlikely... I wanted to dream for a bit with Pick/Terry + Hal/Jack.
Otherwise you're right, Danny C. and Robbie M. are the most probable choices. |
