Ok that's quite a long time for an album production?

But this is rather like it usually is, right?
KTGC had a similar schedule, and though SL was recorded a bit later with the band and then released in September, there may have been some pre-work done by Guy and Mark just like this time. We'll have to see. |

Yes, I had the feeling that the production for KTGC was going very fast as they startet in january 07, according to Guy's diary...

Well, in my opinion, the great news is that there will be a tour in 2010, and I really hope that the next record will be better than KTGC and ATRR.

Actually what Guy said in the first installment of the KTGC diary was, "have been whittling away at his new songs here at British Grove Studios since
early 2006". I think recording/mixing through April with a autumn/September release, fall/winter promo, spring/summer tour is pretty much the schedule
Mark likes, as that's what he's done for the last four solo albums (excepting the Emmylou album).

Yes, when Guy started the Diary in January 2007, they were already in the studio for several months. So everything is exactly in the same schedule as usual.
Mixing in May, release in Sept/Oct., tour start in Feb/March 2010. Nothing really surprising. I must admit I really expected some more "spectacular"
news, like a live album, a box set, unreleased material etc...
As Guy said, "there´s plenty of good news"... But hey, it´s great to have a new diary and hopefully a good new album in about one years time! Love Expresso |

But maybe there is more news coming? Who knows... I have a feeling that there are more surprises coming. "Plenty of good news" means more than one to
me... :-)

GF also mentioned in one of his replies that he couldn't divulge any addtional information about other things without a proper meeting with MK and PK, another strong hint that more MK news is on the horizon. I agree that 'plenty of good news' likely involves more than the beginning of a new MK record and I think plenty of beans are still unspilled (at least I hope so)! Keep Knopflerin' |

I honestly think (in my own opinion, nothing official) that this could see a change of direction.
Seems like these songs have bveen kicking around for a while, and that Guy has already said that the next tour will be different. I personally hope for a return to"Rock & roll" and the Dire Straits sound, but i respect that Mk will do what is right for him. There is nothing wrong with nostalga, just ask Cream & The Police. |

Ok, so we know that everything is going it's usual way. I'm pretty sure there will be a official live release soon...

Well, the last record was supposed to be "quite different", too, but I haven't figured out the big difference yet. So, I have stopped reading too
much into these predictions and I won't set my hopes too high...

KTGC had a bit different sound, but of course, there wasn´t any big difference in style...I hope it will happen this time, but who knows....still, was MK
really so long time in the studio before releasing KTGC? I thought that Guy was working on RLR a lot those times....

Yes MK was in the studio working on KTGC in February 2006. I was listening to the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and MK had rushed from the studio to present the
award to Richard Thompson and it was February 2006.

*Looking in my glass bowl* .........."yeahhhh ...............I see, ..........I seee..........there will be good news next months and years"
New album, new concert and.......don't forget Mark will be 60 next year. He is always acting like a normal person (I mean like we all are too), so I
think he will celebrate this special one besides with his family, a few days later perhaps also.............. with his artist friends and the fans??

K2GC different? | ||
|
I would say K2GC was quite different from previous albums:
1. MK, the worlds best finger picker used a plectrum on most songs. Big difference! 2. MK, the guitarist with the best and most sencible left hand vibrato in the world, played vibrato with his right hand on most songs, using the whammy bar. 3. MK, the best Les Paul and Strat player in the word, did not play strat and almost no Les Paul (only on one song). 4. K2GC was the first solo album with clarinett, flute, sax, trumpet and vibraphone. 5. K2GC was the first solo album not recorded live. 6. K2GC had an intended 50's or 60's sound (the Hank Marvin style guitar, spaghetti western sounds etc) as the first MK album ever. 7. K2GC was the first solo album with MK playing all guitars himself. 8. There were no country songs on K2GC. But hey, it's still Mark Knopfler. And that's what we want, isn't it? Morten |

Morten....totally agree with you. There were big differences in that album in comparison to previous recordings.

Yep , agree to , Henk
But I understand wath goldenheart is saying : when Guy announce a big difference its possible we expect to much sometimes , and then when the new cd comes out it seemes that the difference is not in the way that we expected . . .
But one thing is sure : its always great music. , Henk

There were some changes in direction on K2GC, but most of them were for the bad, it turned out. Mark with plectrum and whammy bar... The new instruments were
nice though, horns etc.
Also, the last two solo albums have been sloooow and very low-key. Sure, there are some foreign influences on a thing such as Postcards from Paraguay, but nothing spectacular. Mark doesn't have to play flat-out rock to satisfy me, but his albums have simply grown too understated for my taste. Blues, bluesrock, folkrock, are great arenas for his modern sound, and I do hope that he starts working with capital letters again, if you know what I mean - let the guitar speak and the songs move. One important aspect to songwriting that he has almost abandoned is the guitar riff. Recently, he has mostly been playing simple lead with a strummed guitar as a background, something that didn't change just because Richard Bennett was not involved with KTGC - the sound remained the same. I say come on Mark, make your voice heard, plug in that guitar, leave an impression! |

Actually, I like the last solo albums more than the old DS albums. The BIA album is for me a real skipper album, I only listen to brothers in arms (song)...
Somehow, he seems to play more relaxed than years ago. I'm glad he didn't reach the level of the worst song (imo) from DS era: Les Boys. I know this post might feel like an attack, it shouldn't be!
