In case there is any doubt in your mind: the guys were AMAZING !!!
Seriously AMAZING.
Laying all my exhilaration aside for having seen the fingers behind all those songs that I loved since I was in the elementary school, and heard the sound that I knew so well from all the DS and MK records, it was an AMAZING event.
First, the sound was SUPERB. It got a bit loud in the second half, but that's a price I'm willing to pay for a good view in the second row.
The bouzouki on Bonaparte intro was a tad too quiet, other than that it was perfect in my opinion.
Second, the performance was ranging from moving to euphoria enticing and back. I was almost moved to tears at times and I haven't cried in more than 10 years. Still no luck, but came close :-). I have to seriously complement Guy, Glenn and Matt on back vocal singing ability. I admired it even back in DS days (Guy, Alan and John, of course), but seeing it live, it's more than commendable. They're doing a terrific job at it.
I don't know how it was before Danny stepped in on drums, but he plays some seriously heroic stuff one moment and then tones down to intimate and moving the next. My kudos to him, serious ones.
Richard is one of more amazing performers I've ever seen. Immaculate guitar playing and smooth stage moves. You couldn't dislike him even if you wanted to. His music skills are extraordinary. My friend informed me he's played in Ljubljana before with Beppe Gambetta and I was so sorry I had to miss that one.
Matt is one amazing guy. He has the aura of an Irish pub musician around him (don't tell him, if he's not Irish :-)). He brings a great spirit to the show with a slightly mischievous attitude (only slightly) and, of course, amazing playing. He's fun to watch and good to hear. Though the piano sounded slightly harsh in my opinion.
Glenn is an outstanding bass player and gets another couple of brownie points for not dropping his week's worth of slap exercise on us during the drum break. Make that a hundred brownie points, because I didn't hear a single slapped note. I seriously appreciate that!
Finally the guitar maestro himself was wonderful. I definitely love it, how he doesn't assert himself with an attitude, but boy does he assert himself with guitar playing and, more importantly, songwriting.
It's good that he misses a note now and then (Sultans of Swing solo) as to make us mortals not want to give up playing completely. I hope he's not sensitive about it :-). Audience for sure was not.
In the bottom line, it was one of the most memorable concerts we had the pleasure of hearing and seeing in Slovenia (an experienced concert going muso friend of mine said only Sting came close). Sound, performance and song choice were as near to perfection as was humanly possible. I would rate it a 100% success and you may freely let my opinion influence your assessment of the gig.
It was wonderful to spend the evening with songs and musicians I've come to know and love through the records since I was a kid. It doesn't get much better than that.
